Tuttavia il virus può raggiungerci anche nelle nostre case: il respiro di un nostro caro potrebbe esserne il veicolo!

Le misure introdotte per contrastare la diffusione del virus, dalla chiusura di scuole ed università all’introduzione del telelavoro in molte aziende stanno trasformando il modo in cui viviamo gli spazi domestici e le nostre case sono ancor di più spazi di conflitto e negoziazione. Esigenze diverse che devono essere soddisfatte molto spesso nello stesso spazio ed allo stesso tempo. Se come è vero le crisi agiscono da catalizzatori, molto spesso accelerando fenomeni e tendenze già in atto, lo stress a cui le nostre abitazioni sono sottoposte stanno mostrando i limiti di metodi e soluzioni non più aderenti alle richieste della società del XXI secolo.

Questo contributo vuole esplorare le implicazioni legate ad una particolare espressione del lavoro da remoto in cui milioni di persone nel mondo si trovano in questo particolare momento e che molto probabilmente diverrà la norma per molte professioni: la videocall. Quando una pandemia ci costringe nelle nostre case, tutte le relazioni professionali e sociali vengono esperite attraverso uno schermo. In un certo senso le distanze vengono appiattite, non importa più il tempo e lo spazio, unica condizione necessaria per continuare a lavorare e comunicare è il possesso di uno smartphone o di un pc collegato ad internet. In un attimo siamo tutti divenuti nomadi digitali. Io stesso mi sono dovuto confrontare con esami e riunioni accademiche mentre mi trovavo in un paese sperduto nell’Appennino Centrale.

La videocall, nonostante non sia paragonabile ad una conversazione in presenza, ne replica alcuni caratteri, tuttavia con delle differenze non trascurabili, in primis il fatto che veniamo raggiunti nelle nostre case. Soprattutto in alcune culture e società, e non c’è dubbio che quella italiana sia una di queste, la casa viene considerata come il luogo in cui si riunisce la famiglia, il luogo in cui sentirsi sicuri, ma soprattutto dove essere sé stessi, poiché la privacy è massima, pressoché totale. Questa concezione viene forzata durante una videocall: le fotocamere dei nostri oggetti tecnologici, dagli smartphone ai pc, fino ad arrivare a sofisticate smart tv, diventano occhi attraverso i quali il mondo può entrare all’interno della nostra sfera privata.

Quando ne usciamo, i vestiti che decidiamo di indossare e gli oggetti che decidiamo di portare con noi, ci descrivono e in qualche modo mediano l’immagine che vogliamo dare di noi. Durante una videocall nonostante l’esperienza sia filtrata abbiamo più informazioni di quante ne avremmo in presenza. Tuttavia, queste informazioni possono essere artificiali. Proprio perché la visuale è limitata e scelta premeditatamente, non è importante cosa è, ma cosa si vede: non necessariamente dobbiamo sforzarci di vestirci per intero, un uomo in giacca e cravatta può essere nudo al di sotto della cintura!

Proprio come se stessimo scattando una foto, siamo noi a decidere come posizionare la fotocamera, cosa inquadrare e cosa no: lo sfondo che scegliamo di mostrare, anche se inconsciamente, è la rappresentazione che vogliamo dare di noi. Lo sfondo che scegliamo di utilizzare diventa una scenografia in cui ci esibiamo. Ecco allora che in ambito accademico la statura, presunta o tale, è direttamente proporzionale alla grandezza della libreria che si ha alle spalle ed al numero di volumi che essa contiene. Molto spesso si opta per avere un muro alle spalle, in modo che la visuale sia limitata e quindi che altra attività possano avvenire simultaneamente nello spazio senza che se ne offra una visione. Lo sfondo scelto per una videocall può rivelare molto della nostra personalità. A volte non ci curiamo troppo dello sfondo scelto, eppure dall’altra parte dello schermo, qualcuno si sta facendo un’idea di noi, anche se parziale e arbitraria. Lo sfondo può rivelare molte informazioni, dalla nostra localizzazione geografica – basta guardare la luce naturale – alla nostra condizione abitativa.

Le piattaforme che utilizziamo per le videochiamate hanno tentato a modo loro di risolvere la questione dello sfondo, principalmente in due diversi modi. Skype ha aggiunto una funzione chiamata “Blur” che sfoca automaticamente lo sfondo, garantendo così la massima privacy. La piattaforma Zoom ha invece optato per una soluzione più creativa e che offre spunti interessanti da una prospettiva architettonica: l’utente può infatti impostare uno sfondo virtuale per sostituire quello reale. Molto spesso il risultato è così buono che non è immediato riconoscere che si tratta di uno sfondo virtuale: d’altronde quando l’immagine viene mediata da uno schermo parlare di reale e virtuale in questo ambito non ha molto senso.
